AI and Mental Health

In our article “AI and Mental Health,” we explore the role that digital tools play in the field of mental health and introduce Clara, our virtual psychological “first responder.”

We are pleased to introduce a very special new team member as part of eap.wellbeing: Clara

Clara is the AI we programmed and trained ourselves—and she’s probably the only team member who never needs coffee, never takes breaks, and still listens patiently.

It was developed to support clients with initial questions regarding mental health, stress, emotional strain, self-care, and well-being.

Clara acts as a kind of “psychological first responder”: she listens, offers guidance, explains complex issues in an accessible way, and provides initial ideas when someone has a question or is looking for a starting point on a topic. Clara can encourage people to take the next appropriate step and seek further support if needed.

One of Clara’s defining features is that she does not draw her “knowledge” from random online sources, but exclusively from carefully selected materials that we have provided her with: books, documents, lecture notes, and expert content from our field of psychology. This allows us to control the knowledge base on which Clara’s responses are based.

It is important to note that Clara is smart, but not all-knowing. She is not a substitute for psychotherapy, a medical evaluation, or a personal consultation. Her answers are intended to provide initial information and psychoeducational support.

AI and Mental Health: Between Opportunity, Risk, and Responsibility

Artificial intelligence has long been a part of our daily lives. It answers questions, summarizes information, and sometimes even supports people with very personal issues. In the field of mental health, too, an increasing number of digital tools are emerging—from apps and chatbots to AI-powered information systems.

This can be helpful, but it requires particular care, especially in this area. People experiencing mental distress often seek not only information, but also reassurance, guidance, and understanding.

AI makes it easier to get started …

One major advantage of AI is its accessibility. Many people find it easier to ask an initial question digitally or anonymously. AI can explain concepts, organize thoughts, and present psychoeducational information in an understandable way—for example, regarding stress, sleep, feeling overwhelmed, conflicts, or self-care.

… and yet it’s no substitute

At the same time, it is important to note that AI cannot replace a psychotherapist, a doctor, or crisis intervention services. It cannot make a diagnosis, establish a genuine therapeutic relationship, or take responsibility for treatment. Qualified human assistance is always necessary, especially in cases of acute crises, suicidal thoughts, severe psychological distress, or medical questions.

The greatest danger lies in overestimating AI. It can provide incorrect or incomplete information, fail to adequately assess individual situations, or give a false sense of security when personal support is actually needed. Data privacy is also important: anyone who shares personal information should know what happens to it.

When used properly, however, AI can be a valuable tool. It can make knowledge accessible, provide initial guidance, and encourage people to seek support. Especially in the context of EAPs, it can serve as a bridge—to counseling, not around it.
